During radiotherapy, the heart may be exposed to radiation, especially in left-sided breast cancers, increasing long-term heart risks. To protect it, we use the Active Breathing Coordinator™ (ABC) with Deep-Inspiratory Breath Hold (DIBH), which moves the heart away from the chest wall, and Oculus VR guidance, which lets patients track their breathing in real time for consistent, safe treatment.

After breast-conserving surgery, patients often require an additional radiation boost to the tumour site, but standard fields may expose healthy breast tissue. The lead plaques at AARO are customised in-house to cater to each patient's tumour site, precisely shaping the beam to target only the tumour bed while sparing surrounding tissue.

When lymph nodes need to be treated, conventional radiotherapy can expose the heart and lungs to unnecessary radiation. With Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT), beams are delivered in arcs that tightly conform to the target area, reducing exposure to normal tissue while ensuring complete coverage and faster treatment.

Whole breast radiotherapy can cause side effects such as swelling, skin changes, and long-term breast asymmetry. Using Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), we focus only on the area where the tumour was, reducing side effects while maintaining excellent cancer control.
Five stages, from your first planning scan to long-term follow-up.
Radiotherapy usually begins three to eight weeks after surgery, or about three to four weeks after chemotherapy has finished. It is typically done as an outpatient treatment once a day from Monday to Friday. Most patients complete a three- to five-week course, though shorter one- to two-week schedules are also available and have been proven equally effective.
Before starting, you will meet your care team who will guide you through every step of treatment. This includes your radiation oncologist, who plans your treatment and monitors progress; a radiation oncology nurse, who supports you with side effect management; a medical physicist, who ensures your plan is safe and accurate; and radiation therapists, who position you and deliver treatment each day. At our centre, this team is made up entirely of women to provide care that is both professional and sensitive.
Preparation begins with a simulation session. You will lie on a CT scanner with your arms above your head while a chest scan maps the treatment area. Tiny tattoo marks are placed on your skin to ensure precise positioning each time. These images are then used to create a personalised treatment plan, which is carefully reviewed and approved by your oncologist before treatment begins.
On treatment days, you will arrive at the suite and change into a gown before being positioned by the radiation therapists. Imaging such as X-rays may be taken to confirm your alignment. Once treatment begins, the therapists step outside the room but continue to monitor you via CCTV, staying in contact through an intercom. The radiotherapy itself lasts only five to ten minutes, and with setup each session usually takes between twenty and forty-five minutes. Treatment is painless, and you can return to your normal daily activities afterwards.
When your course is complete, your oncologist will schedule follow-up visits to check your recovery and manage any side effects. Long-term reviews will continue to monitor your health, watch for late effects, and detect any signs of recurrence.

Each treatment session takes about 10–15 minutes. This includes the time needed to move the patient into the correct position and to deliver treatment.
Radiotherapy is used in breast cancer treatment to kill any microscopic cancer cells that may be present after surgery. This helps to prevent the cancer from coming back.
There are some side effects such as skin changes, fatigue, and changes in texture of the breast tissue. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve after treatment ends. There may be long term changes to the breast tissue such as fibrosis (thickening and scarring of the tissue) or changes in breast size or shape.
When radiotherapy is recommended as part of the treatment plan for a breast cancer patient, it is usually done to help reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
Not all breast cancers need radiotherapy. The need for radiotherapy depends on the type of surgery done as well as the stage of the cancer.

Breast radiotherapy works by targeting high dose radiation to the breast tissue with the aim of killing microscopic cancer cells.
Patients can moisturise the skin area that will be targeted by the radiation. Ensure that the skin area is not exposed to strong sunlight for long periods. Maintain a healthy diet, stay well hydrated and ensure enough rest.
Radiation for breast cancer has short term and long term side effects. The most common short term side effects are tiredness, skin changes and breast discomfort.
Long term side effects are rare but can include lung irritation, cardiotoxicity, breast fibrosis, increased risk of rib fractures and second malignancy risk.
A small part of the lung will be included in the radiation treatment field and a small proportion of patients may experience radiation pneumonitis, which is inflammation of the lung caused by the radiation. This is a treatable condition with oral medication.
No, it does not affect the immune system. Radiotherapy is targeted at the breast tissue and will not cause any changes in immunity.

After radiotherapy is completed, any side effects that the patient experienced during radiotherapy will gradually improve. Thereafter, patients will be monitored with regular follow-up appointments.
